Pink Eye Symptoms

by admin on August 27, 2011

During our lifetime, at some point, most of us will be affected by a common eye infection called conjunctivitis, or more commonly known as pink eye. It is a very irritating infection, sometimes hard to recognize without getting to know the common pink eye symptoms. Generally, the common cause for a pink eye is a viral infection. Pink eye symptoms to look for when dealing with a viral caused infection are watery discharge from the eyes, most often followed with symptoms of a cold. In addition, you eyelids will most likely be inflamed, and your eyes will become extremely sensitive to light.

Pink eye caused by bacteria is the second most prominent type. The symptoms that come with bacterial conjunctivitis are:

Heavy watery discharge, yellow or green in color, generally forming during sleep.

  • Extreme sensitivity to light.
  • Soreness and inflammation in the eye region.
  • Red coloration of you conjunctiva (the white part of your eye).

Allergies are also know to cause pink eye, although in this case it is non-infectious. This mean that the allergies are causing the pink eye symptoms like light sensitivity, irritation, inflammation, the pink/red color of your eyes. If your allergies kick in and you experience pink eye, then most likely the allergies are to be blamed. When they subside, the your pink eye will vanish.

Non-infectious pink eye is not dangerous, and doesn’t need any treatment. Well, unless it is annoying you, or you want to get rid of it for aesthetic reasons. However, infectious or bacterial pink eye can, and in some cases does cause eye damage, and possibly blindness (severe cases left untreated). Depending on the pink eye symptoms severity, you can use a pink eye home remedy or you can choose to go to the doctor. Your doctor will most probably prescribe you eye drops, or perhaps an antibiotic.

Familiarizing yourself with the common pink eye symptoms and pink eye treatments is very important in keeping yourself safe and healthy.

How Do You Get Pink Eye?

by admin on October 17, 2011

Pink eye is a common eye infection, not dangerous, but highly uncomfortable. In order to understand how do you get pink eye, you must familiarize yourself with the types of pink eye and their symptoms. You can read more about it here, but to sum up, the following are the most common types:

  • Viral pink eye – caused by viruses
  • Bacterial pink eye – caused by bacterias (fecal particles, dirty stuff)
  • Allergic pink eye – caused by an allergic reaction
  • Toxic pink eye – caused by toxic chemicals, fumes etc..

The number one reason for getting a pink eye is getting in contact with an infected person. Pink eye is highly contagious!! So if you are paranoid about getting pink eye, keep your contact to a minimum. If it’s someone close, advise him/her to use separate towels and washcloths and wash their hands regularly. Sleeping over, cuddling, or other intimate relations are a no-no at this point.

Example: If the person that has pink eye keeps rubbing his/her eyes (its hard not to, because the eyes are very irritated – itchy) and then touches a door knob, then the door knob will be contaminated. If you touch the door knob later, and then rub your eyes without washing your hands fist, guess what, you will get pink eye!

So when in contact with an infected person, personal hygiene is a priority!! Pink eye is highly contagious and can spread trough direct contact, or trough contaminated objects.

If you haven’t had contact with an infected person, one way of getting pink eye in the first place is trough fecal particles (poop particles) getting into your eye. Bacterial pink eye is NOT nice, so please remember to wash your hands after going to the bathroom. Various bacteria that can cause pink eye can also be found under you fingernails, so I’ll say this again.. Personal hygiene is a must!

The third type we mentioned earlier is allergic pink eye, which, like you guessed, is caused by an allergic reaction to something. That “something” which causes allergic pink eye could be:

- Pollen from trees, grass and ragweed
- Animal skin and secretions such as saliva
- Perfumes
- Cosmetics
- Skin medicines
- Air pollution
- Smoke
- Dust mites

If you are once affected by allergic pink eye, you will probably experience it again, unless you go to a doctor and find out exactly what is the cause from the list above – the allergen.. Then the solution is to simply avoid contact with that allergen (example: avoiding grass in bloom in the “hay fever season”). You can also obtain anti-histamine eye drops, or pills, which will significantly reduce your chance of getting allergic pink eye.

For ways to treat pink eye please read out article on pink eye treatment. If you are interested in a home solution, we have the right thing for you – pink eye home remedies.
